Programme Intended Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:

  • Describe the basic concepts and theories in social science that explain human, societal and global phenomena;
  • Examine the major socio-political, cultural and economic issues affecting human behaviours in the local, national, regional and global contexts;
  • Analyze major human and social issues in contemporary society through inter-disciplinary studies, including major ideas in arts and humanities, and science and technology;
  • Use various data collection methods and apply information technologies to analyze and present data;
  • Apply effective communication skills in relating with a variety of people and identify areas for personal growth and professional development.

Career Prospects

  • Graduates from this programme are competent to work in junior level management positions in various fields, including human resources, business and management, media, health care, customer services, social service, and so forth.

Main Subject Areas

The Associate of Social Science programme exposes students to core ideas in different disciplines of social sciences and helps them acquire social research skills to investigate into an area of interest.

In Year One, students study the following foundation and generic courses:

  • Sociology
  • Introduction to Political Studies
  • Economics for Social Studies
  • Trends and Transformation in World Affairs
  • Introduction to Criminology
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

In Year Two, students take three generic courses: Social Research, Hong Kong: Past, Present and Future, and China in 21st Century. In addition, students choose to study four courses from the following six electives:

  • Governance in the Global Age
  • Justice and Society
  • Society and Economy
  • Comparative Politics
  • Urban Society & Global Cities
  • Culture and Identity
